Though it’s hard to believe that I didn’t see a single movie in theaters for two months after watching Star Wars, it makes sense that I would follow it up with a super sassy semi-anti-hero film.
I cannot emphasize enough how much this is not a children’s movie. NO CHILDREN! NO! It has far too many language! moments alone. The content is way adult — mostly the gratuitous violence comes to mind.
I had the great advantage of not really knowing much about the Deadpool character before seeing this film, other than really small parts in a few comics I read. Although I had seen the previous incarnation of Deadpool in the Wolverine movie, I was informed by many friends that that was NOT an accurate representation of the character. I happened to love this film from the moment it started to the moment it ended (plus extra scene post-credits). I rather enjoyed how Ryan Reynolds, as Deadpool, made fun of Ryan Reynolds. I also enjoyed all the pop culture reference.
This movie was the first time in a long time that I had seen a character break the fourth wall [which, for those who don’t know, is directly addressing the audience, aka, being aware they are in a film].
One thing that was a bit “blah” was the main villain of the story. I thought he was a sort of generic evil dude with an accent. But at the same time, if he was just there to get us started in the series, he did his job. I did enjoy Deadpool’s and Vanessa’s relationship. As not normal as they were, they are quite the pair. I loved the wit and pop culture mentioned in the film. Also, special shout out to the most flexible taxi driver ever, Dopinder.
I’d give this movie a solid 9/10, while Rotten Tomatoes gives it 6.9/10.
