I have now made it to the end of May 2016 movies! I’m catching up… slowly.
Thought it took me a while to warm up to the original X-Men trilogy, I have had no problem with this new series.
I have loved the cast of this series from the beginning. The older characters, the younger characters, all the new characters — everything.
Okay, let’s start off with the title character, Apocalypse. I had no idea who he was or what he was capable of doing before seeing this film. Oscar Isaac has had a tremendous rise in popularity and it helps that his roles have been so fun (Poe Dameron anyone?), including playing the supreme bad guy in this film. Apocalypse stays true to his name in his goal to end everything with the help of his Four Horsemen: Angel (Ben Hardy), Psylocke (Olivia Munn), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and recreate a better world with only the best. I loved the scenes where Apocalypse could both compliment and use fear to gain control over others.
The younger cast, Jean (Sophie Turner) – Scott (Tye Sheridon) – Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) , were really given a chance to prove themselves and impress everybody with the strength they had and ability to control their powers under tremendous duress. But let’s face it, Quicksilver had some of the best lines and scenes in the movie! I love that we see his speed by using slow motion around him. Too bad we didn’t get more Jubilee, because the faux commercial for Xavier’s School for the Gifted was fantastic!
They’ve had to skew some of the storylines to make it sort of fit into the rest of the movies but all in all, I found it rather enjoyable. A decent sort of goodbye for the older cast and a hello for the newer cast.
I’d give it a solid 7.5/10 while Rotten Tomatoes scores it 5.7/10.
