Cage Fever – The Rock (1996)

Don’t let this title fool you, this movie is not about Dwayne Johnson, former WWF/WWE wrestler and legend. Because honestly, how could Nicolas Cage “logically” impersonate a 6’5” Samoan man beast with his magical eyebrows? At least they have one thing in common, which is their affinity for the King of Rock and Roll, ELVIS.

The Rock was directed by Micheal Bay. Michael Bay is rather well known, especially for his car chases and explosions. Also for Bad Boys (1995), Armageddon (1998), and the Transformers movies (2007). It was written by David Weisberg (Holy Matrimony in 1994, Double Jeopardy in 1999, and Criminal in 2016), Douglas Cook (Holy Matrimony in 1994, Double Jeopardy in 1999, and Criminal in 2016) and Mark Rosner.

This movie stars Sean Connery (John Patrick Mason), Nicolas Cage (Stanley Goodspeed), and Ed Harris (Gen. Francis X. Hummel). Cage and Harris later star in the second National Treasure film together as well. A chemist (Cage) and ex-con (Connery) are forced to team up when General Hummel sets up a rogue team on Alcatraz in attempt to prove to America how weak their defense is. They are threatening to release those little green balls of nerve gas and Cage and Connery race against the clock to find and destroy the weapons and men.

I enjoyed this film a lot, not for the Cage factor, but for the Connery. Guys got a killer voice. In true Michael Bay fashion, you had some epic type shots and some great explosions. I like that it was actually shot at Alcatraz, being a California native and all that. Despite the fact that I’ve never been. It’s probably better that way, I hear its really tiny and hard to get in and out of. This is probably the least crazy I have ever seen Nicolas Cage but you can clearly see the madness of the situation take a hold of him.

I would give it a 7/10 while Rotten Tomatoes rates it 6.6/10.
