Zootopia (2016)

Can I be honest with you, readers? (I’d like to think I am). I had zero interest in this film until my dad watched the film and said it was pretty good. He’s a tough critic but he’s got a great sense of humor so I decided to give it a try.

Zootopia was directed by Jared Bush, Byron Howard, and Rich Moore. This is Jared Bush’s first directing gig, but he has writing credits for episodes of Who Wants to Marry My Dad (2003), episodes of All of Us (2003), and Moana (2016). Rich Moore is known for episodes of the Simpsons (1990), episodes of Futurama (1999), and Wreck-It Ralph (2012). Byron Howard is known for Bolt (2008) and Tangled (2010). This movie was written by several people including the directors: Jim Reardon, who is known for several episodes of Tiny Toon Adventures (1990), Wall-E (2008), and Wreck-It Ralph (2012); this is Josie Trinidad’s first writing credit; Phil Johnston, who is known for Ghosts/Aliens (2010), Cedar Rapids (2011), and Wreck-It Ralph (2012); and Jennifer Lee, who is known for Wreck-It Ralph (2012), Frozen (2013), and the Disney Infinity game (2015).

This film stars Ginnifer Goodwin (Judy), Jason Bateman (Nick Wilde), Idris Elba (Chief Bogo), Tommy Chong (Yax), J. K. Simmons (Mayer Lionhart), Jenny Slate (Bellwether), Nate Torrence (Clawhauser), and Alan Tudyk (Duke Weasleton).

When the police cop graduates, with big dreams, from the academy and gets assigned to parking duty, she (Judy) realizes that not everyone has the enthusiasm for the job and ends up getting conned by a local fox, Wilde. She uncovers an kidnapping, drug ring, and a conspiracy to imprison the “more violent” animals.

I enjoyed this film. The different locations in the city were pretty cool. Sometimes I end up liking the surroundings of a film a lot more than the action going on inside. Judy’s ambition reminds me a little of Leslie Knope’s ambition. I kind of thought the plotline took a bit long to figure out; there is a lot going on and, although enjoyable, it felt like it took a long time. Either way, the jokes were good.

I give it a 7/10 while Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 8.1/10.
